It’s not something you really sit around talking about, but the smell of your vagina actually tells you a lot about your health.

Every woman is different so there is naturally a fluctuation in smell, impacted in part by your diet, your hygiene and bathroom habits and what underwear you wear.

What most people don’t know is every vagina has a baseline smell, and also secretes pheromones that are perfectly normal and meant to trigger sexual interest.

There should be a healthy musky scent to it – sort of like when you work out in the gym and build up a sweat – that’s your ‘signature’ smell, according to hormone expert Alisa Vitti.

What you shouldn’t smell

Mary Jane Minkin M.D, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale University School of Medicine, says it’s hard to describe what your vagina should smell like, but very easy to know when something is wrong.

She said: “The vagina shouldn’t smell like rotten fish or anything rotting…The odor folks [describe] is from bacterial vaginosis, which is really an imbalance of good guy and bad guy bacteria (the bad guys are the anaerobic bacteria which tend to be overgrowing, and anaerobes classically produce a foul or rotting type odor).”

Remember your vagina will smell differently when you’re on your period and after sex. It’s also important to remember that your vagina is self cleaning so naturally produces discharge to eject germs.

If discharge changes in colour it’s also a way to know something is up. You want white with a little yellow, if this changes to grey or brighter yellow or green you need to get it checked. If it becomes itchy you also need to go to the doctor.

Try as people might, no one has ever come close to creating a truly successful love potion.

But that hasn’t stopped others in the pursuit of bottling liquid attraction, because, metaphorically speaking, love may very well be in the air.

Specifically, in the secretions our pheromones give off.

The science behind this has led to some strange and unpalatable ingredients in perfumes.

Think castoreum (an emission from the genital scent sacs of the castor beaver), ambergris (a vomit by-product from the stomach of a diseased sperm whale) and musk from the gland of a male musk deer.

Yet the key ingredient to attracting a mate may have been right in front of us all along, ladies.

Allison Ramirez decided to conduct an experiment into seeking love herself – using a perfume made from her own vaginal fluid to test out on dates.

“I wore perfume made from my vagina to see if it would get me better dates.”

This was quite literally the title, gist, and nub of what she said.

At a loose end and looking for love herself, Los Angeles-based writer and artist Allison decided to give this unusual method a whirl.

As her research revealed, using vaginal fluid has long been a ‘secret weapon’ for women.

According to The Joy of Sex, women would simply forego perfume altogether and dab this fluid onto their pulse points.

Despite this reassuring knowledge, Allison decided to plump for a more sophisticated method and instead consulted with the Institute for Art and Olfaction.

There, however, she was told by founder and director Saskia Wilson-Brown that bodily fluids can’t be used in a formula, on account of them not being stable enough.

But that didn’t mean synthetic simulations of bodily fluids couldn’t be used in conjunction with her own.

In the end, Allison plumped for a “Christmassy” scent comprised of cedar, rose, and a synthetic imitation civet cat musk.

It was the musk she ended up using for her experiment, using a long cotton wool bud to extract the excretions from her vagina before dipping it into the perfume and dabbing it on her pulse points.

Allison tried out this combination on three occasions.

The first was on a double-date, which satisfyingly concluded with a kissing session a photo booth and her date even remarking on her scent.

The second outing was a trip to a petrol station and then McDonald’s, where she got an eager and enthusiastic reception from the cashier.

On the final one, a few days later, Allison applied the scent for a breakfast date – and has since made arrangements to see him again.

Having sex can make you more intelligent, a new study by Coventry and Oxford universities has found.

FREQUENT sex will boost your brain power. And you can quote Oxford University on that.

In a study released in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological and Social Sciences, researchers found that people who indulged in frequent, regular sexual activity scored higher on a swath of mental tests.

The study shows frequent sex improves fluency, visual and spatial perception.

Their verbal fluency was better.

Their ability to visually perceive objects was improved.

And they could judge the space between objects better.

So is it all just about picking out another potential partner from among a crowd, and then chatting them up?

The Coventry and Oxford University scientists didn’t go there.

Instead, their study builds upon research published last year which suggests sexually active adults generally score higher on cognitive tests. But that study did not examine the specific impact of the frequency of sex.

Another study, released earlier this year by the Oregon State University, found employees who were having more sex (at home) reported higher morale, greater job satisfaction and a greater sense of ‘engagement’.

Is there a specific set time limit on how long sex should last? Ask a man and most will respond with “I wish it (or I) could last longer.”

Many a man has questioned and felt frustrated as to why he can’t seem to last longer in bed before ejaculation. Dr. David Samadi, chairman of urology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that If it is of any consolation to men, research has shown that the average man lasts about six minutes. This was a study looking at premature ejaculation, where the men were timed as soon as penetration occurred and stopped when the man ejaculated.

The time ranged from a speedy six seconds to a lengthy 53 minutes, with the majority of men lasting between four to 11 minutes. Anyone lasting longer than 21 minutes was considered an outlier.

Studies like this can give men a better notion as to what is “average,” and most can likely take heart that he falls within that range.

Truth be known, most women are usually quite happy with the length of time sex lasts and are not necessarily interested in long romps in bed.

Practice Kegel exercises faithfully

There is more evidence from research studies demonstrating the power of Kegel exercises for men in prolonging staying power in bed.

One study showed that men who had had lifelong premature ejaculation were cured after using pelvic floor exercises after several months. A 2016 review of male ejaculation found that men who do Kegel exercises could train the perineal muscles to gain better control of the point of no return in regards to ejaculation.

Men with a long penis give women more orgasms, research finds

Most men have worried about the size of their penis at some point.

Women who prefer sex with men who are blessed with longer penises are more likely to have orgasms, a study has revealed.

The research, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, has found that women who prefer longer penises are more likely to have vaginal orgasms, but not clitoral orgasms.

Publishing the findings, researchers wrote: “Research indicates that women’s orgasm during penile–vaginal intercourse is influenced by fitness-related male partner characteristics, penis size is important for many women, and preference for a longer penis is associated with greater vaginal orgasm consistency.”

These orgasms were triggered “without concurrent clitoral masturbation”.

The study questioned three hundred and twenty-three women about their sexual behavior over the past month.

Researchers asked women to report on how much sex they were having, what type of sex and the effects of a longer than average penis on the likelihood of orgasm during penile–vaginal intercourse.

They found that the likelihood of vaginal orgasms with a longer penis was increased – but not other types of orgasm.

In the conclusions, the scientists explained: “Women who prefer deeper penile–vaginal stimulation are more likely to have the vaginal orgasm, consistent with vaginal orgasm evolving as part of a female mate choice system favoring somewhat larger than average penises.”

Women Who Have Lots of Sex Have Better Memories, Study Finds

Can more sex improve your memory? Well, a study from researchers at McGill University in Canada says that it can certainly help women.

Research into how penile-vaginal intercourse (PVI) affects a woman’s brain found that it can help women to remember abstract words.

The study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour is titled “Frequency of Penile–Vaginal Intercourse is Associated with Verbal Recognition Performance in Adult Women.”

A team at McGill University in Canada found a link between sex and the growth of nervous tissue in the hippocampus – the area of the brain that controls emotions, memory, and the nervous system.

To make their findings, the team asked a small cohort of 78 heterosexual women under the age of 30 to take part in a memory test involving people’s faces, and another with abstract words. They also completed a questionnaire to record their Grade Point Average, and whether they used birth control.

The results showed that the women who had sex most frequently were better able to recall abstract words. Sex didn’t, however, affect their score for remembering faces.

The findings suggest that having sex often is linked to memory function and the hippocampus, the authors wrote in the paper published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour.

The connection could be due to the fact that sex is a form of exercise, or that it helps to ease mental conditions – such as depression and stress – that impact the memory.

Further research is now needed to pinpoint whether achieving orgasm affects the memory.

The study found that the results suggest that such sexual activity may indeed have beneficial effects on memory function in healthy young women.

Dr. Jens Pruessner, a psychology professor at McGill University and one of the authors on the study told “The chemicals involved with signaling reward to the brain—hormones and neurotransmitters—have also been shown to be associated with both memory and sexual activity. Thus, you can indeed speculate that both are associated with reward.”

Turns out that getting laid is the best way to get that promotion.

Researchers at Oregon State University working with colleagues elsewhere compared the sex lives and work environment of employees in committed relationships. They discovered the drones who were busy bees in the bedroom tended to have the advantage over less satisfied co-workers later.

New research suggests that frequent sexual activity can make you better at your job. This arousing study, conducted by researchers at Oregon State University, found that people who bang on the reg feel more fulfilled in their professional lives.

“We make jokes about people having a ‘spring in their step,’ but it turns out this is actually a real thing and we should pay attention to it,” wrote Dr. Keith Leavitt, an associate professor in OSU’s College of Business. “Maintaining a healthy relationship that includes a healthy sex life will help employees stay happy and engaged in their work, which benefits the employees and the organizations they work for.”

The researchers worked to compare the sex lives and work environments of employees in frisky relationships to those in sad, sexless relationships and discovered that those who had turned the heat up in their bedroom at night were more productive the next day at work.

Overall, they surveyed 159 married employees for the course of two weeks and found that employees who had sex were in a good mood the following day. That, in turn, led to better work engagement and job satisfaction throughout the workday.

Actually, they found those who had more sex were more likely to report they were in a good mood the next day. And those good moods led to the more sustained engagement at work, and better job satisfaction throughout the day. The effect, which was found to linger for at least 24 hours, was as strong in men and women.

“Sexual intercourse triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with the reward centers in the brain, as well as oxytocin, a neuropeptide associated with social bonding and attachment,” Dr. Leavitt said. “That makes sex a natural and relatively automatic mood elevator and the benefits extend well into the next day.”

But, the researchers also found – unsurprisingly – that bringing work-related stress can get in the way of a healthy sex life.

Dr. Leavitt said in the era of smartphones, where it’s normal practice to reply to work emails out of hours, his team’s findings highlight the importance of leaving work at work.

For, when work invades your personal life, your sex life suffers – and in turn, your productivity at work falls.

He added, “This is a reminder that sex has social, emotional, and physiological benefits, and it’s important to make it a priority.”

The findings are published in the Journal of Management.

Intense exercise lowers men’s libido, study finds

Men who exercise strenuously may have a lower libido than those whose workouts are lighter, according to one of the first studies to scientifically delve into the relationship between men’s workouts and their sex lives.

For years, scientists and active people have debated whether and how exercise affects sexual desire and human reproduction.

But most past studies have centered on women. Typically, this research has found that when some female athletes, such as marathon runners, train intensely for many hours a week, they can develop menstrual dysfunctions. These problems seem caused by hormonal imbalances related to physical stress and frequently affect a woman’s interest in sex and her ability to conceive.

But such dysfunctions are rare and usually resolve after the athlete lightens her training load.

Research has tended to focus on how our sex drive benefits from regular exercise. Aside from the “confidence-boost exercise gives[1]” us (and confidence leads to “greater sexual satisfaction[2]”), there are the physiological effects.

Physical fitness stimulates our good hormones, increases blood flow (increased blood flow to the genitals increases arousal for men and women alike during sex) and mentally gets us in the mood.

One “unusual study[3]” found that women who worked out on a treadmill for 20 minutes, then watched an erotic film (as you do), reported “a significant increase in physiological sexual arousal with exercise”.

Other “research has found[4]” that men who exercise moderately have better erectile function than those who don’t.

But, as the lead researcher, Professor Anthony Hackney of the new study said, there is a “tipping point”.

In the study, by researchers from University of North Carolina’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science, 1100 physically active men were asked about their training regime, including intensity, duration and frequency, and libido as well as their general health.

After controlling for age, it was found that participants with low to mid-range training intensities had greater odds of a “high/normal libido” than those with the highest training intensity. Similarly, those who trained for shorter or mid-range durations reported higher libido than endurance athletes.

“Exposure to higher levels of chronic intense and greater durations of endurance training on a regular basis are significantly associated with … decreased libido scores in men,” the paper’s authors concluded.

Professor Frances Quirk, the director of research at Barwon Health, says it is not the first study to show the “negative impact” of endurance exercise and elite sport.

She says there are two reasons for this – the psychological and the physical. It is known that intense exercise can “negatively impact testosterone[5]” (which affects “both sex drive and sperm count[6]”), but Quirk adds:

“There’s a parallel between immunological function and sexual interest and there is a negative effect – in elite sports and endurance athletes – on immunological function.”

Quirk adds that moderate activity provides “a reasonable amount of benefit” but when we start pushing ourselves hard for extended periods of time, we become mentally and physically “spent”.

“Sex will be very low on the list,” she says.

Interestingly, she explains that this is not necessarily a conscious choice. “Your body is making that choice for you by switching off that drive,” she explains. “You are in survival mode really.”

While the latest study focused on male interest in sex, Barwon says that sexual dysfunction is “very common” in certain forms of physical activity, like cycling.

“The normal cycling seats put constant pressure on the perineal nerve,” Quirk says, explaining that this can lead to “numb balls” and “numbing of genitals” which can affect both function and arousal in male and female cyclists.

“It’s not just endurance athletes that suffer sexually,” she says.

In terms of how intense exercise (or uncomfortable seats) affect us reproductively is unclear.

Most research has focused on women’s fertility, as intense exercise can stop the menstruation process and affect reproductive viability.

“Fertility specialists will often ask a woman about whether and how much she exercises,”  Professor Hackney told “The New York Times[7]. “Based on our data, we think they should also be asking the man.”

How much is too much?

“If you have a couple of coffees, you are a bit perky and will get stuff done,” Quirk says. “If you have 12 however …

“It’s a moderation issue.”

Moderate exercise improves our sexual interest and responsiveness, while extreme exercise dulls it.

Quirk says that the definition of “moderate” will vary from individual to individual and it pays to play around with the amount that leaves us feeling energized versus the amount that leaves us feeling depleted.

The research paper, called “Endurance Exercise Training and Male Sexual Libido,” was published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

Getting More Sleep Can Lead to Better Sex, Research Finds

The next time you find yourself hitting snooze one-too-many times, you can tell yourself that it’s all in the name of good sex. Research from the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) reveals that the more sleep someone gets, the more likely they are to both want and enjoy sex.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School, the University of California Los Angeles and the Mayo Clinic in Arizona studied 93,668 women aged 50 to 79 enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study.

Of those who had fewer than seven hours of sleep a night, only half reported having sex with their partner within the last year.

And only 56 percent of those said they were satisfied with their sexual activity.

Women who had six hours of sleep a night were 9 percent less likely to be sexually active, and those who had five hours a night were 17 percent less likely.

Those who slept nine or more hours each night were 20 percent more likely to be sexually satisfied. Those over 70 who slept fewer than five hours were 30 percent less likely to be sexually active than women the same age sleeping seven to eight hours.

“Seven hours of sleep per night will improve sexual satisfaction and has been shown to increase sexual responsiveness,” said Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of The North American Menopause Society.

Technically this research focuses solely on women who are menopausal and postmenopausal — but your alarm clock doesn’t need to know that. No matter the age group, there’s nothing wrong with a little extra sleep.

Quick tips for a better night’s sleep

  • Stick to a schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, as this will reinforce your body’s sleep-wake cycle and keep you from hitting the snooze button.
  • Ditch the tech. Numerous studies have shown that looking at a smartphone or tablet before bed disrupts sleep.
  • Relax. This means factoring in some time to unwind at the end of the day – take a long shower, read a book or listen to some soothing music. This promotes better sleep by easing the transition between wakefulness and drowsiness.

The study was published online Feb. 1 in the journal Menopause.

The study said: “Orgasm intensity was related to how attracted [women] were to their partners, how many times they had sex per week and ratings of sexual satisfaction.

“Those with partners who their friends rated as more attractive also tended to have more intense orgasms.

“Sexual satisfaction was related to how physically attracted women were to their partner and the breadth of his shoulders.

“Their partner’s sense of humor not only predicted his self-confidence and family income, but it also predicted women’s propensity to initiate sex, how often they had sex and it enhanced their orgasm frequency in comparison with other partners.”

Interestingly the researchers think there’s an evolutionary reason for girls enjoying sex with hot, strong and funny guys.

It all comes down to a female selecting a good mate which will allow her to breed more “successful” children.

But before you get too disappointed about not being good-looking, successful, wealthy and hilarious remember it’s all relative.

Basically, if a woman finds you attractive and laughs at your jokes then she’s more likely to climax in your company.

And some studies suggest that personality wins out over appearance every time.

A recent study conducted by the journal of Evolutionary Psychology found that altruism (a selfless concern for others) was the main thing that women looked for when choosing a serious boyfriend.
